BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team lost its home opener to Martin Methodist, 3-0, Friday evening in Bill Battle Coliseum. The Panthers lost by the scores of 25-18, 25-20, and 28-26. MMC moves to 2-1 on the season, while BSC drops to 0-1.
In the first set, things were fairly even until the 9-9 point, after which MMC rattled off nine straight points to go up 18-9. The Panthers answered with four points, and even scored three straight points down the stretch on Martin Methodist set points, but the RedHawks hung on for the 25-18 win.
In set two, the teams traded points to open play but MMC pulled ahead again, this time after the 6-6 mark. The Panthers cut it to two, once at the 14-12 mark and then at the 20-18 mark, but weren't able to gain the lead, and the RedHawks won 25-20.
Set three was much closer, with the teams playing to 12 leads, five of those down the stretch after the 22-22 mark. The teams traded points, with BSC going up 26-25 but MMC coming back and winning the set, 28-26, and the match on a kill by Precious Sanders.
Jhessica Martins led Martin Methodist with 16 kills, followed by Sanders with 15. Sanders also had a double-double with a team-high 21 digs, as did setter Caroline Santos with 30 assists and 12 digs. Santos also had four service aces.
Senior #Sarah Harris# led BSC with 11 kills and 14 digs, while junior #Jennifer McKannan# and sophomore #Haley Johnson# posted 11 digs apiece. Junior setter #Christine Denning# led the Panthers with 28 assists.
BSC takes on Martin Methodist again tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
