BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Led by senior #Sarah Harris# with 25 kills, the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team picked up its first win of the season this afternoon, defeating Martin Methodist 3-1 after being down 1-0 after the first set. BSC won by the scores of 21-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-17 to move to 1-1, while MMC drops to 2-2.
The RedHawks went up 6-0 to start the first set, and held the lead until the Panthers battled back to tie things up, 10-10. The teams played to five ties after that point before MMC pulled out to a 23-18 lead. The Panthers cut it to 23-21, but the RedHawks scored the final two points to win, 25-21.
The two teams played to eight ties to start the second set, and things stayed even, with neither team leading by more than two down the stretch before BSC was able to score two straight to win 25-21.
The third set stayed just as close as the first two, as neither team led by more than four at any point. BSC went up 24-20 for set point, but MMC fought back to tie things up 24-24. The teams traded points four times before the Panthers finally scored two straight to win 28-26.
MMC led for much of the first half of the fourth set, going up 13-9 before BSC scored five straight points to go up 14-13. The RedHawks tied things up with another point, but the Panthers scored five straight again to go up 19-14. BSC hung on to its lead, eventually winning 25-17 on an MMC attack error.
Harris led all players with 25 kills, and had her second straight double-double with 19 digs. Junior setter #Christine Denning# posted 44 assists, and junior #Jennifer McKannan# led with 22 digs. Freshman #Presley Dickson# was also in double digits with 13 digs, and sophomore #Hope Harris# recorded 11 kills. Sophomore #Haley Johnson# led the Panthers with five blocks.
Jhessica Martins led Martin Methodist with 18 kills, followed by Kayla Spencer with 11 and Precious Sanders with 10 kills. Sanders also posted a game-high 26 digs, and Spencer also had a double-double with 14 digs. Setter Caroline Santos recorded a double-double as well with 37 assists and 14 digs.
The Panthers are on the road next weekend at the Rhodes Fall Classic, taking on Loyola New Orleans and Principia College on Friday, and Union University and Freed-Hardeman University on Saturday.
