Volleyball announces five commitments for upcoming season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball program has received commitments from five players for the upcoming 2011 season, Head Coach Judy Green announced today.

The incoming freshman class consists of Sara Kate Bracewell (Chelsea, Ala./Briarwood Christian HS), Kelly Foster (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy), Meredith Lee (Montgomery, Ala./The Montgomery Academy), Katie O'Bar (Germantown, Tenn./St. George's Independent School), and Kathleen Pfitzer (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS).

Sara Kate Bracewell

Bracewell, a 5'8" outside hitter out of Briarwood Christian High School in Chelsea, Ala., was selected First-Team All-State in 2010 and Second-Team All-State in 2009 by the Alabama Volleyball Coaches Association (AVBCA). She was also named 2010 All-County and 2009 Honorable Mention All-County by both the Birmingham News and Shelby County Reporter. Bracewell was also a softball standout at Briarwood, and excelled in the classroom, receiving the 2011 President's Award for Academic Achievement. She was also a member of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society in 2010 and 2011, and was on the A/B Honor Roll all four years.

Kelly Foster

Foster is a 6'0" outside hitter from Athens Academy in Athens, Ga. She was named 2010 Northeast Georgia Player of the Year and Area Player of the Year, earning All-State and senior All-Star honors. Foster also garnered All-State accolades in 2009, and was 2008 Area Player of the Year. She was also on the Honor Roll and was a National Honor Society member.

Lee, a 5'10" right side/middle blocker out of The Montgomery Academy in Montgomery, Ala., was 2009 and 2010
All-Metro Volleyball Player of the Year and served as Team Captain as a senior in 2010. She was 2009 and 2010 First-Team All-State, and was named to the State Championship All-Tournament Team.

Meredith Lee

Lee was also on the 2010 Alabama All-Star Sports Week South Volleyball Team. She was also a standout basketball player, and was named 2011 Montgomery Academy Female Athlete of the Year. She also was a nominee for the Jimmy Hitchcock Award for Christian Leadership in Athletics, and was a Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and four-year Honor Roll member.

O'Bar, a 6'0" middle blocker from St. George's Independent in Germantown, Tenn., was named to the 2011 Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Team. As a senior co-captain in 2010, she helped lead the Gryphons to the 2A region and state titles and set school records in

single-match solo blocks (8) and single-season blocks (42). O'Bar was named to the 2010 AVCA All-American Under Armour Watch List, 2010 Memphis Best of the Preps, 2010 Honorable Mention All-Region team, and 2009 and 2010 Memphis Metro Volleyball National Team. She also received the 2010 St. George's Volleyball Inspiration Award. In AAU volleyball action, she helped lead her team to fifth place in the 2010 National Championship Club Division. In 2009, O'Bar helped lead St. George's to third place in the state, and the Gryphons were the state championship runner-up in 2008. She was also on the Headmaster's List and Honor Roll all four years, and was a member of the National English and Spanish Honor Societies.

Pfitzer, a 6'0" right side hitter from Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham, Ala., was 2010Birmingham News Metro South Player of the Year and was named to the 2010 All-Metro Team and 6A AVBCA First-Team All-State. She received the 2010 Vestavia 3D Award, was named a US Marine Corps

Kathleen Pfitzer

Distinguished Female Athlete, and helped lead the team to the Final Four of the state tournament in 2010. Off the court, Pfitzer was named a News Free Press Scholar Athlete and received the Thompson Reynold Scholar Athlete Award as a senior. She was on the Academic All-Metro Team as a junior, and was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Who's Who Among American High School Seniors.

"We are very excited about our 2011 class," Green said. "We have five tremendous student-athletes joining our program. Assistant Coach Kyndall Waters deserves the credit for this outstanding class as she worked extremely hard at recruiting them. We are ready to get them on campus and help them grow in all areas of their lives. Their enthusiasm and passion to help us become one of the nation's elite NCAA DIII volleyball programs is so evident. It is going to be a very fun four years with them."

The 2011 volleyball team opens its schedule at home, Sept. 3 & 4, hosting the MaK Attack Tournament in Bill Battle Coliseum, taking on LaGrange, Piedmont, Huntingdon and Stillman.
