BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Martin Methodist College defeated Birmingham-Southern and West Alabama today to win the BSC Tri-Match, hosted by the Panthers in Bill Battle Coliseum.
It was the last home match of the season for BSC, who falls to 20-7 with losses to Martin Methodist and West Alabama.
MMC defeated BSC 3-1 in the first match of the day by the scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, and 25-20. Paula Sioto led the Red Hawks with 21 kills, while Ann-Katherin Kuehorn added 18 kills. Sioto and Kuehorn recorded double-doubles with 12 and 15 digs, respectively, and Karen Damasio led with 18 digs and five blocks. Caroline Santos led with 41 assists, and Ya Zhao also added 12 digs.
For BSC, junior Hope Harris led with 19 kills and also recorded 17 digs. Senior Christine Denning also had a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs, and senior Jennifer McKannan led with 24 digs. Freshman Alex Bothe was also in double digits with 11 digs, and freshman Sarassa Burrus led with three blocks.
In the second match, Martin Methodist beat West Alabama, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23). Kuehorn led with 16 kills, followed by Sioto with 12 and Damasio with 11. Damasio also had a game-high 21 digs, followed by Kuehorn and Zhao with 12 each and Santos with 10 digs and 44 assists.
Olivia Drew and Thais Hollerbach led UWA with eight kills apiece, and Hollerbach also led with 18 digs while Drew had 11. Alexis McHale led with 27 assists, and Casey Byrnes also had 11 digs. Drew and Katelyn Beardshear led with four blocks each.
In the third and final match tonight, UWA beat BSC, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21). Hollerbach and Drew led again with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, and Drew recorded a double-double again with 13 digs. Byrnes led with 19 digs, and Noel Corbin added 12, while McHale led with 33 assists and Beardshear led with four blocks.
Bothe and Harris led the Panthers with nine kills each, and Denning posted another double-double with 25 assists and 16 digs. McKannan led BSC with 23 digs.
The Panthers travel to Atlanta this weekend for the SCAC East/Central Crossover, hosted by Oglethorpe, where they will face Centre and DePauw on Saturday and Sewanee and Rhodes on Sunday.
