BSC defeats Fisk, falls to No. 19 Spring Hill in Fall Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—No. 19 Spring Hill College won the BSC Fall Invitational, hosted by Birmingham-Southern this weekend.

BSC defeated Fisk University earlier today, 3-0, but lost to Spring Hill, 3-0, who is ranked 19th in the nation in the NAIA and is undefeated at 34-0 on the season. The Panthers now stand at 19-17 on the season.

The Panthers celebrated Senior Night prior to the match against Spring Hill, honoring seniors Hope Harris, Alessandra Norman, and Alaina Smith, as well as junior Chelsea Pittman, who will be leaving BSC after this season.

Against Fisk, the Panthers won by the scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-10. Freshman Kathleen Pfitzer led BSC in a balanced offensive effort with five kills, and six other Panthers had four kills apiece. Junior setter Lauren Reibe, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, recorded 26 assists, and junior libero Presley Dickson led with 15 digs. Harris also had 10 digs, and freshman Katie O'Bar had two solo blocks.

In the match against Spring Hill, the Panthers lost 25-18, 25-10, 25-12. Sophomore Alex Bothe led the team with nine kills, Reibe led with 20 assists, and Dickson led with 17 digs. Harris also recorded 12 digs.

"This tournament was very good for our team at this point in the season," Head Coach Judy Green said. "I think it was great to be challenged. Spring Hill is the best volleyball team we've faced all season long - you don't get to be 34-0 if you're not good. But I was proud of our team for how maturely they handled the situation. We knew we were going to have to be aggressive, and I think we were, we played as aggressively as we could.

"Now we have a week to prepare for the conference tournament, and I know our team's going to be very excited about that."

Senior Alaina Smith was also named to the All-Tournament Team, which is listed below.

The Panthers are off for the next five days, in which they will prepare for their first-ever trip to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship, hosted this year by Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. BSC enters the tournament as the fourth seed and has a first-round bye, facing either No. 5 Trinity or No. 12 Sewanee on Friday, Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m.
