Panther Volleyball heads to first-ever Division III postseason appearance

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team heads into the weekend for its first-ever postseason appearance in the Division III era, traveling to Jackson, Miss., for the 2011 SCAC Volleyball Championship, hosted by Millsaps.

The Panthers enter the tournament as the fourth seed and receive a first-round bye, after which they will take on the winner of the match between fifth-seed Trinity and 12th-seed Sewanee at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

"We are all very anxious and excited to be playing in our first postseason," junior libero and team captain Presley Dickson said. "It's been a long road this season and our team has faced a lot of emotional adversity, but it has brought us closer together and we're more of a family than any other team I've been a part of. This weekend, above all else, win or lose, we are going to play for one another."

BSC went 19-17 during the regular season with a 9-5 conference mark. The Panthers swept the SCAC East Division with 3-0 wins against every opponent.

This weekend's tournament will mark the first postseason event for a BSC volleyball squad since the 2006 season, the program's last year in the Big South Conference.

"It has been a long road to get to this point for our volleyball program," Head Coach Judy Green added.  "I realize I have only been here with these players for a few months, but I completely understand what they have gone through during the transition period. This time last year, their season was over and I am sure they were left unfulfilled. This year it is a different story. I have never been a part of a team that was so excited to have the chance to play for a championship than this team. Every player has come to every practice with a determination and desire to get better in order to help the team. All season long we have grown closer through the challenges and adversity we have faced. We have developed a bond that few teams experience. We might bend sometimes, but we will not break. I am honored to lead this team into our first-ever NCAA Division III postseason. We are looking forward to the competition."

BSC's match on Friday, as well as its first match on Saturday, win or lose on Friday, will feature live video, available at With a win on Friday, the Panthers will play at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday; a loss will send them to the consolation bracket to play at 9 a.m.
