Volleyball wraps up season with wins against Dallas, Rhodes at SCAC Championship

JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team capped off the 2011 season with two wins today at the SCAC Volleyball Championship, defeating Dallas and Rhodes, both by the score of 3-1. The Panthers end the season with a winning record of 21-18 under the guidance of first-year coach Judy Green, formerly of the University of Alabama.

In their first match of the day, the Panther squad defeated the University of Dallas 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-20 behind the double-double effort of sophomore Alex Bothe. Her 22 kills and 12 digs, complemented by junior Lauren Reibe's 43 assists, helped the Panthers down the Crusaders for the second time this season. Junior Shelby Moore also reached double digits with 11 kills and led the team with three blocks.

BSC's final match of the tournament saw the Panthers recover from a dropped third set to rally back in the fourth and drop the Lynx of Rhodes College. The Panthers won the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-21, fell in set three 25-20, and then battled back to take the fourth set and match 26-24. Led by junior Presley Dickson's and freshman Sara Kate Bracewell's four service aces apiece, BSC outpaced Rhodes in the service ace department 12 to 6. Defensively, four Panthers had double digit digs, led by sophomore Alex Bothe's 19, and senior Alaina Smith recorded five blocks to lead the team.

"What a way to finish our first postseason," Green said. "We played so inspired today. It was another example of bending a little but never breaking. I thought our seniors played so well today and they are leaving as winners in more ways than one. This was a season of firsts for us from beginning to end. We now have a foundation to build upon."
