BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Head Coach Judy Green has released the 2012 Birmingham-Southern volleyball schedule.
The Panthers will not see much of the friendly confines of Bill Battle Coliseum, with only eight home matches, seven of those against conference opponents. BSC will begin play in the brand new Southern Athletic Association (SAA) in 2012.
"We are very excited about our 2012 schedule," Green said. "This will be the first year we will be playing in our new conference and we will automatically get to host seven home matches with the SAA opponents. We played every team in our new conference last year, so we know what to expect. We will have to bring our 'A' game every match in order to accomplish our goal."
Since the SAA is a new conference, there are no automatic bids to the NCAA tournament, so BSC will have to rely on an at-large bid if it wants to go to the big dance.
"It was extremely important this year to play as many NCAA in-region matches as possible in order to be considered for a post-season bid, since that is what the NCAA selection committee goes by when selecting the at-large teams. Our non-conference schedule is very competitive as we will play at the College of Mt. St. Joseph Invitational, where we will see Heidelberg, Thomas More and Mt. St. Joe. Also we were very happy to get Emory back on the schedule in a single match at the end of September."
Emory was ranked eighth in the nation at the end of the 2011 season, while Heidelberg was ranked 15th.
The Panthers' home opener is slated for Sept. 22 against Sewanee. For the complete schedule, click HERE.
