BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team will host a Stand Up to Cancer benefit at its home match against Millsaps next Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m.
Donations of $2.00 will be accepted at the door in lieu of admission, although no fans will be turned away. T-shirts will be available for purchase for $15.00, and free popcorn and drinks will be served.
There will also be free photo shoots for any families with members who have or are currently battling cancer.
"We are excited to host this inaugural Stand Up to Cancer volleyball event," Head Coach Judy Green said. "Almost everyone on our team has been touched by cancer in some way. People associated with our program know that I recently lost my mother to lung cancer, our senior setter Lauren Reibe lost her dad last season to brain cancer, and currently our sophomore middle blocker Katie O'Bar's father is battling lymphoma. We felt that as a team we needed to do our part to help raise some money to donate to the Stand Up to Cancer research fund in an effort to find a cure. It is our way of saying we believe that there is a cure and that one will be found sooner rather than later.
"Ordinarily, we do not charge admission for any of our home matches," Green continued, "but we are asking for a $2.00 donation at the door. No one will be turned away but we do hope our fans will reach into their pockets for this small amount. We are also selling commemorative t-shirts for $15.00 with all proceeds going towards our donation."
