BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team survived a third-set surge by Oglethorpe to win 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers move to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in the Southern Athletic Association; the Stormy Petrels fall to 4-9 overall and 0-7 in league play.
BSC won the first and second sets fairly easily, 25-13 and 25-15, but the Petrels came out on fire in the third set, starting with five straight points to open the scoring. The Panthers responded with five straight points in turn to tie it up, and the rest of the set was close the whole way, with neither team leading by more than three points for the remainder of the set. The teams essentially traded points, especially down the stretch, playing to 13 ties after the 5-5 mark. The last tie occurred at 27-27 before two OU errors cost them the set and the Panthers won 29-27.
Senior Alex Bothe led BSC with 11 kills and posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 digs as well. Junior Meredith Lee led the team with 15 digs, and sophomore libero Lauren Bedford had 10 digs. Sophomore setters Emily Dang and Katie McCormack were both in double digits with assists; Dang had 21 and McCormack had 12. Freshman Laura Van Peursem led at the net with five blocks (one solo and four assisted).
Erin Shelton and McKenna Bondarenko led Oglethorpe with eight kills each, Anna Marie DiSalvo had a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs, and Megan Makuck led with 21 digs. Lisa Inglis led with four blocks.
The Panthers are on the road for their next four matches, traveling to face Rhodes and Hendrix next weekend. BSC is back at home for the last home matches of the regular season on Oct. 19 and 20, hosting Centre and Sewanee.
