JACKSON, Miss.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team dropped its Southern Athletic Association opener Wednesday evening, losing to Millsaps on the road, 3-1.
The Panthers fall to 7-6 overall, while the Majors remain undefeated at 9-0.
The Majors won the first two sets by a close margin. Although BSC rallied near the end of the first set, Millsaps won 25-22. In the second set, the Panthers led 23-22 before the Majors put away three straight points to pull ahead 2-0 in the match.
BSC came back strong in the third set, leading the whole way to win 25-16, but in the fourth set Millsaps used a 7-0 run to pull up 17-9 and never looked back, winning 25-19 to clinch the match.
Senior Kathleen Pfitzer led the way for the Panthers with 14 kills, hitting .263 for the match, while sophomore Lynsie Byrd added 10 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Junior setter Katie McCormack also had a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs. Senior Meredith Lee and junior libero Lauren Bedford posted 18 digs apiece, and junior Emily Dang also had 14 digs.
BSC is on the road for four matches this weekend, facing SAA rival Berry and non-conference foe Maryville on Saturday in Rome, Ga., and then taking on SAA opponent Oglethorpe and non-conference Wesleyan College on Sunday in Atlanta.
