BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern volleyball team won its sixth straight match Sunday afternoon, defeating Rhodes College in conference action 3-0 in Bill Battle Coliseum.
The Panthers moved to 13-6 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association, while the Lynx fell to 4-11 overall and 0-5 in the SAA.
BSC won the first two sets fairly easily, 25-13 and 25-17, but Rhodes kept things interesting in the third set. The Lynx stayed one step ahead of BSC for almost the entire set, leading by a handful of points with the Panthers on their heels the whole time. The teams played to 11 ties through the 21-21 mark, after which the Panthers rallied to go 4-1 to clinch the win on a kill by senior Katie O'Bar.
Sophomore Lynsie Byrd led with 15 kills and hit .317 for the match, and she also recorded a double-double, her 11th of the season, with 12 digs. Junior setter Katie McCormack had 35 assists, and senior Meredith Lee led with 18 digs. Junior libero Lauren Bedford also posted 15 digs, and sophomore Laura Van Peursem led with four blocks.
BSC is at home again next weekend, hosting Sewanee on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 a.m., and Centre on Sunday, Oct. 5, at noon in Bill Battle Coliseum.
