BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern juniors Lauren Bedford and Katie McCormack swept this week's Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Player of the Week honors, the league office announced today.
McCormack, a setter from Germantown, Tenn., had a stellar weekend, helping BSC cap off its SAA slate with wins against Berry, Friday, and Oglethorpe, Saturday. She had a double-double against Berry with 49 assists and 14 digs, her 12th of the season, and then had 41 assists and nine digs against Oglethorpe. For the week McCormack had 90 assists (12.9 per set) and 23 digs (3.3 per set), as well as eight kills, hitting .500, and two service aces. She now leads the SAA in total assists and is ranked second in assists per set.
Bedford, a libero from Trussville, Ala., recorded 25 digs against Berry on Friday and then 29 digs in three sets against Oglethorpe on Saturday. For the two matches this week she had 54 total digs for an average of 7.7 per set. Bedford is now ranked second in the SAA in total digs and digs per set.
The Panthers travel to Memphis this weekend for two non-conference matches to wrap up the regular season, facing Rust College and Agnes Scott College on Saturday at Rhodes. BSC then begins post-season play on Friday, Nov. 7, as the third seed in the SAA Championship, hosted by top-seeded Hendrix in Conway, Ark. The Panthers will face sixth-seeded Sewanee at 3 p.m. that day in the quarterfinals.
