Volleyball defeats Sewanee 3-1 in SAA Quarterfinals

CONWAY, Ark.—Led by four different players with double-digit kills, the Birmingham-Southern volleyball team defeated Sewanee, 3-1, Friday afternoon in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association Championship, hosted by top-seeded Hendrix in Conway, Ark.

The third-seeded Panthers move to 23-10, while the sixth-seeded Tigers fall to 8-19 to end their season. BSC advances to the semifinal round to face second-seeded Millsaps tomorrow at 1 p.m.

After leading for most of the first set, BSC was out-scored 8-2 down the stretch to lose 27-25. The Panthers rebounded after that, though, winning 25-20 in the second set, 25-15 in the third, and 25-22 in the fourth to win and advance to the semifinals.

Senior Katie O'Bar led the Panthers with 14 kills, hitting .444 with only two errors. Senior Meredith Lee recorded 12 kills, and senior Kathleen Pfitzer and sophomore Lynsie Byrd each added 10 kills. Lee and Byrd also posted double-doubles with 17 and 22 digs, respectively, as did junior setter Katie McCormack with a game-high 47 assists as well as 15 digs. Junior libero Lauren Bedford led the Panthers with 26 digs, and Pfitzer led with seven blocks.
