CONWAY, Ark.—Six Birmingham-Southern volleyball players were honored on Friday after being voted to the 2014 All-Southern Athletic Association Volleyball Team. The winners were announced at a banquet prior to the start of the SAA Championship in Conway, Ark.
Junior Katie McCormack (setter) and sophomore Lynsie Byrd (at-large) were voted to the First Team. McCormack leads the SAA in assists with 1,033; she surpassed the 1,000-assist mark of her career in today's quarterfinal win against Sewanee. She also ranks second with 9.22 assists per set. Byrd leads the league in kills with 391 and is second with 437 points, and she also ranks third in kills per set (3.37).
Sophomore Laura Van Peursem (middle blocker) and senior Kathleen Pfitzer (at-large) earned Second-Team honors. Van Peursem leads the conference in solo blocks (22) and is ranked second in total blocks (90), and Pfitzer leads the SAA with 54 service aces.
Senior Katie O'Bar (middle blocker) and junior Lauren Bedford (libero) were named Honorable Mention All-SAA. O'Bar is third in the SAA with 71 total blocks and fifth with a .283 hitting percentage, and Bedford is second in the league with 4.92 digs per set and third with 536 total digs.
The Panthers won their quarterfinal match today against Sewanee, 3-1, and will advance to face No. 2 Millsaps tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the semifinals.
