SAA Tournament: Panthers fall 3-1 in Semis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Birmingham-Southern women's volleyball team ended its run for a Southern Athletic Association championship in a 3-1 semifinal loss to Berry College Saturday. Berry moves on to face No. 25 Hendrix in the title match.  Senior Laura Van Peursem (Huntsville, Ala./The Randolph School) was named to the all-tournament team for her play.


Marjorie Ward (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) earned her fourth triple-double of the season.  She finished with 23 assists, 12 kills, and 10 digs.


Rachel Lee (Montgomery, Ala./The Montgomery Academy) picked up her sixth double-double of the year, earning a team-high 29 assists with 12 digs.


Defensively, Caroline Johnson (Lucas, Texas/Lovejoy HS) and Melaina Hissam had a team-high 22 digs.  And Van Peursem earned a team-high 15 kills with only one error on 32 swings.


Birmingham-Southern closes the season 22-7 overall.  They came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed.  After posting an 11-3 conference record, all six starters were named to all-conference teams headlined by Johnson and sophomore Jeneva Salter (Madison, Ala./Bob Jones HS) who each earned first-team honors.


Salter led the team in kills, kills per set, and points.  Johnson led in digs, digs per set, and was second in service aces.  The Panthers offense was run by Lee and Ward. The pair accounted for 80 percent of the team's assists.


At the net, Van Peursem dominated defensively, raking up 92 blocks, including a team-best 14 solo.
