ROME, Ga.—The Birmingham-Southern men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2010 slates today at the Berry Invitational. The BSC men finished fifth, and the women placed sixth.
Senior Mary Elaine Williamson was the top finisher for the women, coming in seventh overall in a field of 124 runners with a 5K time of 19:24.95. On the men's side, sophomore Robert Willett placed eighth in a field of 113 with an 8K time of 27:06.63.
For the men, the Panthers had two freshmen with impressive season openers, as Trent Blumenthal placed second among the team with a time of 28:09.01 and Daniel Nally placed third with a time of 28:46.56.
"It was a good feeling to finally get our first meet of the season underway," Head Coach Kenneth Cox said. "Both teams have been working hard towards having a solid opener that we can build on for the rest of the season. We really came together today and showed that we can compete with good teams and that we are moving in the right direction."
