No. 13 Panthers return home this weekend to face Austin College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Standing at 4-0 on the season and ranked 13th in the nation by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and 16th by, the Birmingham-Southern football team returns to its home field this weekend to face Austin College, Saturday at 1 p.m. in Panther Stadium.

The Austin Kangaroos stand at 1-3 on the season after losing to Sewanee last weekend, 31-10.

This will be the sixth meeting between the programs, who were both previous members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (to which Austin still belongs). BSC won last year's meeting in Sherman, Texas, 34-10, as well as the games in 2010 (44-21) and 2009 (35-28). The Panthers hold a 3-2 record against the 'Roos.

BSC recently opened Southern Athletic Association play, defeating Rhodes last weekend in Memphis, 16-2. Seniors Aaron Sherrill and Shawn Morris scored touchdowns, while junior Ryan Laughlin had a field goal. Senior Nick Gordon led the Panther defense with 10 tackles, including seven solo tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass break-up. For his efforts he earned SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors.

So far this season, Morris leads the BSC rushing effort with 317 yards and five touchdowns on 49 carries, followed by junior Joseph Moultrie with 300 yards and five touchdowns as well on 29 carries. Senior quarterback Jimmy Stainback leads with 546 passing yards and is 28-42 with one interception. Sophomore Sam Vermilyea leads the receivers with 174 yards on eight catches with three touchdowns.

On the defense, senior Andrew Shannon leads with 24 tackles (14 solo), followed by Gordon with 22 (14 solo). Senior Cory Corcoran leads with 2.5 sacks, and sophomore Ty Keenum has three pass break-ups.

For Austin, quarterback Noah Jesko leads with 1,013 yards and is 86-175 with five touchdowns and nine interceptions. Travis Zambiasi is also 78-138 with three touchdowns, five interceptions and 705 yards. Brogan Funderburg leads on the ground with 203 yards on 48 carries and three touchdowns, and Jordan Schell leads with 638 receiving yards on 37 catches with four touchdowns. Kenneth Eneh leads the 'Roo defense with 87 tackles (37 solo) and three interceptions.
