Football travels to face Stetson this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern football team (2-0) takes to the road again this weekend, traveling to face first-year program Stetson University (1-1) in Deland, Fla., Saturday at 7 p.m. Eastern.

It will be the first meeting between the schools; the Hatters are a first-year NCAA Division I non-scholarship program.

BSC is coming off a 35-32 win at home last weekend against Hendrix, another first-year program and fellow Southern Athletic Association member.

Senior quarterback Tyson Beacham was 22-28 with 263 yards and two touchdowns against the Warriors. Senior tailback Joe Moultrie led with 113 yards rushing on 18 carries, scoring one touchdown, and junior wide receiver Michael Cowan led with 114 yards on six catches, including one touchdown. Other scorers were junior tailback Issac Nichols, junior halfback Marquis Pratt, and senior wide receiver Tyler Johnson.

On defense, junior Devante Smith led with 10 tackles, including nine solo tackles. Junior linebacker Wesley Hansard had three sacks and four tackles-for-loss, with eight tackles total, and was named to the Team of the Week for his performance.

Stetson lost on the road last week, falling 20-13 to Florida Tech in Palm Bay, Fla. Prior to that they opened their season with a 31-3 home win against Warner University.

Freshman quarterback Ryan Tentler is 31-48 in two games so far this season, with 261 yards and three touchdowns. He also leads with 62 rushing yards. Freshman wide receiver Rob Coggin leads with 117 yards and two touchdown catches. Freshman defensive back Donald Payne leads the defense with 21 tackles (13 solo).

After this weekend's game BSC returns home on Sept. 28 to host No. 5 Wesley at 1 p.m. on Battle Field at Panther Stadium.
