Panthers Dominate Early in 34-17 Road Win Over Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Birmingham-Southern football defense blanked Millsaps College in the first half of their Southern Athletic Association matchup Saturday to help the Panthers win 34-17 on the road.  BSC (6-3, 4-3 SAA) has now posted the most wins in a season the program has seen since 2012.

Trevor Oakes (Somerville, Ala./Hartselle HS) completed 17-of-28 passes with no interceptions for 150 yards and a touchdown.  Kyler Jackson (Hoover, Ala./Auburn Univ.) led the Panthers backs with a game-high 56 rushing yards on eight carries with no losses.  Robert Shufford (McKenzie, Ala./McKenzie HS) earned 54 yards with a touchdown, and Zack Seay (DeFuniak Springs, Fla./Freeport HS) ran for 53 yards and two touchdowns, respectively, to lead the team in scoring.  Gentry Neese (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin HS) led the receivers with a team-best 70 yards.

The Panthers defense wreaked havoc on Millsaps, earning four takeaways and keeping the Majors out of the endzone for over 44 minutes.  They were led by Sy Butler (Childersburg, Ala./Childersburg HS), Myles Myers (Alpharetta, Ga./Johns Creek HS), and Matthew Byers (Pelham, Ala./John Carroll Catholic HS).  Butler finished with a team-high eight tackles, two solo, and a pass breakup.  Myers earned seven tackles, five solo, with two tackles for a loss of five yards and an interception returned 42 yards in the second quarter.  Byers finished with six tackles, five solo, and grabbed an interception of his own, returning it 11 yards.  The interception was Byers fourth of the season, making him the programs all-time career interceptions leader with 14.

Ryder Andrews (Homewood, Ala./Homewood HS) finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points after being perfect on the day.  He went 4-for-4 in point after kicks and 2-for-2 in field goals, breaking his previous program record by drilling a 52-yarder to open scoring in the first quarter.  Andrews also punted for 126 yards, averaging 42 yards per punt, and kicked off for 399 yards.

BSC closes out the season at home.  The Panthers take on Centre College on Saturday, Nov. 10. It'll be senior day on the Hilltop as the Panthers recognized several extraordinary young men who have been a part of the BSC football family.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
