Panthers fall to Maryville at home, 79-66

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Birmingham-Southern women's basketball team dropped a home game to Maryville College, 79-66, Tuesday evening in Bill Battle Coliseum.

The loss moves the Panthers to 2-2, while the Scots move to 4-1.

BSC scored the first basket of the game and that would be the Panthers' only lead. The teams played to three ties after that up to the 6-6 mark with 17:36 remaining in the half. Maryville used a 9-1 run to pull up 15-7 and then used several more small runs to build up to a 41-26 lead at the 2:09 mark before taking a 44-30 lead into the locker room at the half.

Maryville hit its largest lead of the game so far, 46-30, on a jumper to open the second half. BSC was able to cut the Scots' lead to eight several times over the course of the second half, but never could come closer, and Maryville stretched the lead to as much as 18, 79-61, with 1:15 remaining. The Panthers closed the game with a three-pointer by senior Elizabeth Bromirski and a layup from sophomore Kelsey Brown to cut the lead back down to 13, 79-66, by the final buzzer.

Brown led the Panthers with a career-high 17 points, as well as a team-high five assists and four steals, and sophomore Jane Romano recorded 13 points and junior Diamond Elston had 11. Romano and Elston also led BSC with eight rebounds apiece.

Maryville's Mackenzie Puckett led all players with 23 points on 11-20 shooting as well as four blocks, while Alex Bond led with seven rebounds, and Lailah Farmer led with six assists.

The Scots shot better than the Panthers in all categories. Maryville hit 33-63 (52.4 percent) from the field to BSC's 23-59 (39 percent), 7-5 (46.7 percent) from three point range to BSC's 2-14 (14.3 percent), and 6-8 (75 percent) from the free throw line to BSC's 18-29 (62.1 percent). The Scots also out-rebounded BSC 38-36 but turned it over twice more than the Panthers with 15.

BSC is back in action at home this Sunday, Dec. 1, hosting Millsaps at 3 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
