Boyd Scores Game-Winner in Battle at Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – The Birmingham-Southern women's soccer team defeated Wesleyan College 3-2 on Wednesday night, improving to 6-3-1 on the season.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Panthers surrendered two unanswered goals in the second half but re-took the lead late with a game-winner in the 75th minute.

Senior forward Taylor Andrews (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County HS) opened up the scoring early in the match, beating the Wesleyan goalkeeper for an unassisted goal in the fifth minute. It was her fifth goal of the year.

Freshman midfielder Emma Choate (Tifton, Ga./Tift County HS) doubled the Panthers lead before the halftime break, scoring her third goal of the season in the 40th minute. Sophomore forward Sydney Barrow (Birmingham, Ala./Indian Springs HS), BSC's points leader, was awarded the assist on the play.

In the 37th minute, the Wolves goalkeeper Carlee Dykes was shown a red card, giving the Panthers a man-up advantage for the remainder of the match.

At halftime, Birmingham-Southern led Wesleyan 2-0.

In the second half, the Wolves mounted a comeback effort. The home team cut BSC's lead in half in the 65th minute with a Christina Wiswell goal, and then the Wolves equalized with another goal six minutes later.

After Wesleyan tied the game up, it did not take long for Birmingham-Southern to re-take the lead. Four minutes after the Wolves equalizer, senior McKenna Boyd (Versailles, Ky./Woodford County HS) found her fourth goal of the season, a goal that would prove to be the game-winner.

Boyd's unassisted score gave BSC a 3-2 lead which the Panthers held until the final whistle.

BSC outshot Wesleyan 24-17 in the match; Barrow led the Panthers with seven total shots and four shots on goal. The Panthers also led in corner kicks 5-2.

Senior goalkeeper Katherine Kozera (Rome, Ga./Rome HS) played most of the match, 66 minutes, and finished the game with a season-high six saves.

Birmingham-Southern will return to the Hilltop for its next match, a Southern Athletic Association game against the Berry College Vikings on Friday, Oct. 5 at 5 p.m.
